Muted autoplay

The Reel is on mute. Get the song name anyway.

The mute icon only silences your speaker. The file on a public Reel still has the soundtrack. Shazam cannot hear a silent phone. A link can.

Do this without unmuting

  1. Leave the mute switch where it is. You do not need to hear the Reel to name it. Unmuting is only for your own curiosity, or for a mic app when you have no link.
  2. Open the Reel and tap Share → Copy link. Paper plane, or ⋯ if Share isn’t there. Stories are not this job — they have progress bars at the top and no stable public file.
  3. Confirm the clipboard. It must contain instagram.com/reel/ or /reels/. A username is the profile. Three taps, by phone.
  4. Paste it on the homepage and tap Find song. The finder reads the file. Read the title in the result. Play it on Spotify later, somewhere you want sound.
  5. Unmute only if we could not reach the Reel. That message means the file never arrived (private, deleted, blocked). Then listen for two seconds to see whether music is even there. A screen recording of a still-muted Reel is silence — don’t upload it.

Paste it while it’s muted

The match does not use your speaker.

Mute hides the speaker, not the file

The mute icon on a Reel means your phone is not playing audio. The video on Instagram’s servers still has whatever soundtrack the creator uploaded. Shazam cannot hear a silent speaker. A finder that reads the public URL can.

This is the whole trick, and it is why “hold another phone up to the screen” is a worse plan than copying a link. Two phones, a quiet train, and a muted Reel is three failures stacked. One paste avoids all three.

Copy the link while it is still muted

1 · Stay on the Reel

You do not need to watch it with sound. You do need a public post, not a Story or a Close Friends clip.

2 · Share → Copy link

Paper plane or ⋯, then Copy link. Confirm the text looks like instagram.com/reel/…. Phone-by-phone steps: how to copy an Instagram Reel link.

3 · Paste on the homepage

Use the finder and tap Find song. Read the title in the result. Play the preview or open Spotify when you are somewhere you want sound.

The broader version of this flow, including what to do if the sticker says Original Audio, is how to find a song on an Instagram Reel.

When people unmute and still get stuck

Unmuting is reasonable if you want to know whether you care about the song. It is a bad requirement for identification. After you unmute, three different things happen, and only one of them is “Shazam will get it.”

  • You hear a clear song. A mic app can work if the room is quiet. The link is still faster and does not depend on the room. Comparison: Shazam alternatives for Reels.
  • You hear talking over music. Your ears may pick out the chorus while a mic app locks onto the voice. Link fingerprinting has a better chance because it hears the mix in the file, not the desk fan. That case is finding the song under a voiceover.
  • You hear nothing, or only the creator’s voice. The licensed track may have been removed, or there never was one. No volume setting brings back audio Instagram stripped. Check the sticker and the caption. If both are blank, read when a Reel has no song name.

Places you should not have to unmute

The link method is the one that respects the situation you are actually in:

  • A meeting, a library, or a child sleeping in the next room
  • Public transit, where raising the volume just feeds Shazam the carriage noise
  • A desktop browser at work, with the tab muted and no speakers you want to use
  • Scrolling a batch of Reels at night with the hardware mute switch on

Copy several links if you want, but the free tier is two identifications in total on this browser. Spend them on the Reels you actually want. Repeating a URL you already identified is a cache hit and stays free.

Muted is not the same as private

A public Reel with a mute icon is identifiable. A private Reel you can only see because you follow the account is not, even if your phone is at full volume for a mic app sitting in your hand. The finder never sees private media. If the post will not open in a logged-out window, stop pasting it.

Stories are a third category: they may be audible on your phone and still have no link we can fetch. For those, Shazam during playback is the practical tool, or wait until the creator posts a Reel. Which Instagram surfaces work is mapped in how to find a song from Instagram.

If the link method comes back empty

Mute was not the cause. The audio may be speech, an unreleased edit, or too short to fingerprint. A failed fetch (we could not read the public file) is different from a no-match, and neither burns a free identification. The next steps — including the short upload, which does require that you can play the clip — are in Reel song not found.

Do not screen-record a muted Reel and upload the silence. The file will not contain a song your speakers refused to play. Either paste the link, or record only after you have heard music.

Questions

Can you identify a Reel if my phone is on mute?

Yes, if you paste a public Reel link. ReelSongFinder fetches the audio from the URL. The mute switch on your phone only affects your speaker, not the file.

Shazam hears nothing because the Reel is muted. What should I do?

Stop using the microphone. Copy the Reel link and paste it into a link-based finder. Unmute only if you have no public link and need a mic app.

I unmuted and still only hear the creator talking. Is the song gone?

Not always. Music can sit under the voice. A link match sometimes still names that bed. If the licensed sound was removed, the file itself may be silent or speech-only, and no tool can invent the missing track.

Does unmute-on-the-Reel change the result?

No. Identification does not listen to your phone. Unmuting only matters for your own ears or for a mic app like Shazam.

Leave the volume alone

Paste the public Reel link. The match does not use your speaker.
