From a video file
Find song from video: upload the clip, get the title
If you have the video itself, a clip from your camera roll, a file someone sent you, or a screen recording of a post on any app, you can upload it here and get the song. No link is needed, and the app the video came from does not matter. The music has to be audible in the file.
You’ve used your 2 free song matches.
Free is 2 matches per browser, one time. To match more Reels, pick one:
$4.99 one-time · 20 more song matches · no subscription
$9.99/month · unlimited song matches · cancel anytime
A Reel you already matched still opens free. Already paid? Restore with your checkout email.

The box above says Instagram Reel because a link has to be a public Reel. To use a video file, press No link? Upload a screen recording instead under the box and choose the file.
Short answer: To find a song from a video, upload the video or a screen recording with the sound on; the audio is fingerprinted against a music catalog and you get the title and artist, or an honest no match. Large files are reduced in your browser to the first 30 seconds of audio, so trim the clip to start where the song starts.

What you can upload
The file picker takes audio and video files: MP4, MOV and WebM videos, and MP3, M4A, WAV and OGG audio. In practice that covers four cases:
- A video on your phone or computer. Pick it from the gallery or Files.
- A video someone sent you in a chat or by email, once it is saved on the device.
- A screen recording of a post from TikTok, YouTube, X, Facebook or any other app. These sites cannot be pasted as links here, but a recording of them is just a video file. TikTok, YouTube Shorts and X (Twitter) each have their own page.
- A recording of a Reel you cannot paste. See the Reel screen recording page.
Steps
- Make sure the video has the music in it. For a screen recording, turn on device (internal) audio. A recording made with the microphone only hears the room. Recording tips for iPhone, Android and desktop are in identify the song without downloading.
- Press “No link? Upload a screen recording instead” under the box at the top of this page and choose the file.
- Press Find song. You get the title, artist, a 30-second preview when the catalogs provide one, and buttons for Spotify, Apple Music and other stores.
- Play the preview against the video. If the hook sounds the same, you have it. If not, see is the match right?.
What happens to a big video
The matching service takes files of about 10 MB, and a phone video is usually much larger. A file up to about 9 MB is uploaded as it is. A bigger one is decoded in your browser first, and only a mono 16 kHz WAV of the first 30 seconds, about 960 KB, is uploaded. The video is not sent. We measured that step on six synthetic test recordings from 20 MB to 107 MB in MP4, WebM and MOV, and every one came out at 960 KB; the figures are on the screen recording page. We have not tested it in Safari or on a phone, and if your browser cannot decode the file, it is sent unchanged and an oversize file is refused with a message.
The consequence is the thing to remember: for a large video, only the first 30 seconds are heard. If the song starts a minute in, trim the start first. The page find a song in a video shows how.
Link or file?
| You have | Do this |
|---|---|
| A public Instagram Reel link | Paste it in the box. It is the quickest route; see song finder by video. |
| A TikTok, YouTube or X link | Record the video with sound and upload the recording. |
| A video file on the device | Upload it. |
| A private account, Story or Close Friends clip you can play | Upload a recording of it. See private Reels. |
| A screenshot | Not possible. There is no sound in an image. |
How accurate is it?
The match compares the audio with a catalog of released recordings, the way Shazam does. A clear, studio recording of a released song, with the music louder than anything else, usually matches. It does not match what it cannot hear: speech over the track, a sped-up or pitched edit, a live version, a hummed tune, a very new release, an unreleased snippet or royalty-free library music that is not in the catalog. When there is no match we say so and do not invent a title, and a no-match does not use up a free match. We have not measured a hit rate for recordings of each app, so we do not quote one.
If the video is from an app that shows its own music credit, read that first. It is free and exact. Tap the sound name on TikTok, the description on YouTube.
Cost
The first 2 matches in a browser are free and need no account. After that, 20 more matches are $4.99 once, or Unlimited is $9.99 a month; see pricing. A match for the same Reel link you already identified is free, and a failed upload or a no-match is not counted.
Questions
Can I paste a video link instead of uploading a file?
Only a public Instagram Reel link. Links from TikTok, YouTube, X and other sites are rejected as an invalid URL before any audio is read. For those, record the video with the sound on and upload the recording.
What file types can I upload?
Any audio or video file your browser can pick: MP4, MOV, WebM, MP3, M4A, WAV and OGG are listed in the file picker. A screenshot or a photo has no sound, so it cannot be matched.
How big can the video be?
A file up to about 9 MB is sent as it is. A bigger one is decoded in your browser and only a mono 16 kHz WAV of its first 30 seconds (about 960 KB) is uploaded, so the video itself does not leave your device. That shrinking was measured for files up to about 107 MB; the page attempts it up to about 600 MB, and above that the file is sent as it is and refused if it is over the limit.
Does it search the whole video for songs?
No. For a large file it uses the first 30 seconds, and it returns one match, not a list of every song with timestamps. If the song is later in the video, cut the video so it starts where the music starts. The page find a song in a video shows how.
Why did my video get no match?
The usual reasons: the recording has no internal audio (it picked up the room instead), speech or effects cover the music, the track is a remix, a live version, a very new release or library music that is not in the catalog. A no-match is not counted against your free matches.
Is it free?
The first 2 matches per browser are free, with no account. After that a 20-match pack is $4.99 once, or Unlimited is $9.99 a month. A failed upload or a no-match is not counted. See pricing for the details.
How do I find a song from a video on my phone?
Save the video or screen-record it with internal audio on, open this page in your phone browser, tap upload, and pick the file from your gallery. The same works for TikTok, YouTube Shorts, X, and Facebook videos.
Upload the video
Press the upload link under the box, choose the file, and press Find song.
