From a recording

Find the song from a Reel screen recording

If all you have is a screen recording of a Reel, you can upload it as it is. A screen recording is usually 20 to 100 MB, so the page turns it into a small audio file on your device first and uploads that.

Steps

  1. Record with the sound on. Use the phone’s screen recorder with device audio, not the microphone, and let the music play for at least ten clear seconds. The recording tips for iPhone, Android and desktop are in identify the song without downloading.
  2. Open the home page and press “No link? Upload a screen recording instead” under the box, then choose the video.
  3. Press Find song. Starting the recording where the music begins matters, because for a large file only the first 30 seconds are used.

What we measured

We made six test recordings (a test-pattern video with a tone, 60 seconds each) in MP4, WebM and MOV, chose each in the upload control in desktop Chrome, and read the size of the request the page sent. The page replaced every one of them with a mono 16 kHz WAV, and each took under a second to prepare.

Measured on 2026-10-04 against the live upload form with the server reply mocked, so these numbers are about the upload step only. They are synthetic recordings, not real Reels, and we did not run this in Safari or on a phone. Whether a song is found depends on the clip and the recognition catalog, not on the shrinking.

What gets matched, what fails

  • Matched: clear music in the first 30 seconds of the recording.
  • Fails: a silent recording, the room’s microphone instead of the Reel’s audio, or speech over the track.
  • Not possible: a screenshot, or a private account’s Reel you cannot play. See private Reels.

A match uses one of your free matches (the first 2 are free, then a 20-pack or Unlimited; see pricing). A failed upload or a no-match is not counted. When the result is wrong or missing, is the match right? and song not found explain the next step.

When a link is easier

A public Reel link needs no recording: copy the Reel link and paste it. Use the recording when the Reel was sent to you as a video, the post was deleted, or the link cannot be fetched. For a video sent in a chat, see a Reel sent in DMs. If the recording is not of a Reel, for example a video from another app or a file on your device, see find song from a video.

Questions

Is there a file size limit for a screen recording?

The matching service takes about 10 MB, so the page shrinks anything over 9 MB before it leaves your device: it decodes the audio in your browser and sends a mono 16 kHz WAV of the first 30 seconds, about 960 KB. Recordings up to about 600 MB are shrunk this way. Past that, or if your browser cannot decode the file, it is sent as is and an over-limit file is refused with a message.

Does my video leave my phone or computer?

For a file over 9 MB, only the 30-second audio WAV is uploaded; the video is never sent. A smaller file is uploaded as it is.

Which part of a long recording is matched?

For large files, the first 30 seconds. If the song starts later, record again from the moment the music starts, or trim the start in your gallery.

Why did my recording get no match?

The usual causes are a recording with no internal audio (the room instead of the song), speech over the music, or a track the catalog does not have. A no-match is not charged as a match.

Can I upload a screenshot?

No. A screenshot has no sound, and the match works on audio.

Upload the recording

Choose the file on the home page. Large videos are turned into a small audio clip in your browser.
